🤔 Why do we do this?⁠
⁠
Because breathing involves both body and mind processes and is more complex than you might think, habitual stressed breathing habits sneak in and do more harm than good without awareness.⁠
⁠
1️⃣ This is why awareness is the first step.  So, how do you get started with breath awareness? ⁠
⁠
Simply observe your breath without any attempt to change it. Be curious about the sensations you notice.⁠
⁠
Here are a few inquiries:⁠
❓Are you breathing through your nose or mouth?⁠
❓Where do you feel the movement happening as the air enters your body?⁠
❓Can you hear your breath?⁠
❓Is your breathing rate fast, slow, or in between?⁠
❓Do you feel like you are getting a full and satisfying breath?⁠

In small doses, good stress can motivate you and help you perform better on a task, but how can you tell the difference between good stress and bad stress?⁠

What is stress exactly? 🤔⁠
⁠
Biologically speaking, stress is anything that activates the sympathetic nervous system- action or alarm state. 🚨 This leads to the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. ⁠
⁠
The sympathetic nervous system is often called “fight-or-flight” mode. Historically, stress was meant for situations when we needed to engage in conflict (fight) or run away to safety (flight). ⁠
⁠
Our bodies similarly respond to all stresses (even perceived threats). Unfortunately, this response isn’t helpful for modern and chronic stresses (like being overscheduled or stuck in a traffic jam). ⁠
⁠
Chronic stress can lead to emotions like overwhelm, anger, and anxiety. ⁠
⁠

Levi is 9 weeks old and thriving! I got to babysit him last night and am filled with love and pride for this little one! 💙

He has an infectious smile and tenacious appetite and we love him to pieces! 💙

His parents @karaesser_ and @_jacobesser are amazing parents and are the biggest gift to Levi. 💞

“Put your oxygen mask on first before assisting others.”⁠
⁠
This analogy is an excellent example of why I educate parents, teachers, and therapists first so that they have the tools to model and teach healthy breathing to children. If you are not o.k., you can’t help anyone else to be o.k. ⁠
⁠
🧽 Kids are like sponges and will absorb and mimic the role models in their life. They will adopt a stressful breathing style if a parent or teacher models dysfunctional breathing habits (mouth breathing, fast and shallow breathing).⁠
⁠
Our instinct is to rush to assist children before ourselves, but by meeting your needs first, you will model healthy coping strategies and habits.⁠
⁠
🧡 Self-care is not selfish. 🧡⁠
⁠
