Tell them to "Write a letter to whoever or whatever is making you feel scared, sad, or angry."⁠

Tell them this:" When you're feeling anxious, I want you to count 4 red things you see, 4 yellow, and 4 green. Do this until you feel calm."⁠

Here is the fastest way to catch your breath, lower your heart rate, and speed up recovery after running or a high-intensity workout.⁠

Step 1️⃣: Bend over and place your hands on your knees.⁠
⁠
Spreading your shoulder blades apart to give your lungs room to expand and put the diaphragm at an optimal position. ⁠

Step 2️⃣: Close your mouth and breathe through your nose⁠

This slows your breathing rate and depth.⁠
⁠
Step 3️⃣: Lengthen the exhalations⁠

Teach kids the STOP & BOP by doing an exhale challenge. See how high they can count on one exhale!⁠
⁠
Here's how to teach it:⁠
⁠
1️⃣ First, show your kids how to S.T.O.P and prepare the body for a healthy breath.⁠
⁠
S= Shoulders relaxed⁠
T= Tummy soft ⁠
O= Open/close mouth to release the jaw (and encourage nasal breathing)⁠
P= Posture tall. ⁠
⁠
2️⃣ Now, let’s B.O.P!⁠
⁠
B= Breathe⁠
O= On⁠
P= Purpose⁠

3️⃣ Tell them to, "Inhale a wide belly breath through your nose (Count 1...2...3)"⁠

Here are 3 tools to use with your kids to teach deep diaphragmatic breathing by visualizing a wide breath, not tall.⁠

1️⃣ Tool #1- Hoberman Sphere (“breathing ball”) ⁠
⁠
Expand the ball on the inhale and narrow on the exhale.⁠
⁠
2️⃣ Tool #2- Slinky⁠
⁠
Inhale as you open the slinky out wide, mimicking a horizontal breath.⁠
⁠
3️⃣ Tool #3- Hula Hoop ⁠
⁠
Inhale and expand the middle; imagine breathing all around the middle, inhaling out wide towards the hula hoop and exhale in towards the center.⁠

This breathing exercise helps kids slow down the breath and extend their exhales to reduce anxious thoughts 😌💭

1️⃣: Find a beautiful flower and hold it up.  What color is your flower?
2️⃣: Inhale through your nose as you smell the fragrant flower for 3 counts
3️⃣: Think of the worry, name it, and exhale slowly into a real or imaginary dandelion for 6 counts. 

Ask the your kids this: “Did you see your worries blow away?”

Teach kids mindfulness this summer with this Inner Tube Breath Exercise!

This helps kids breathe deep using the diaphragm by bringing awareness to the middle of the body (all the way around). 🫁

Here’s how you can teach this exercise to kids:

1️⃣: Tell kids to place (or imagine) an inner tube around the bottom of their ribcage. Tell them “This is where your main breathing muscle, the diaphragm is located!”

2️⃣: Teach kids to, “Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your ribs move out and up while keeping your shoulders relaxed.”

↔️ Next, tell them to, “Focus on getting wider, not taller, with each inhale. Pretend to breathe into the space all around your middle, like you’re trying to push the inner tube outward.”

3️⃣: Finally, say, “Exhale and feel your middle get smaller.”

Have you ever caught yourself letting out a big sigh? 😮‍💨

This is our body’s way of naturally resetting itself.  We do this automatically, but we can also sigh on purpose to reduce stress in real-time. This is called a Physiological Sigh, which is a pattern of breathing that can reduce stress in real-time.

According to Dr. Andrew Huberman (@hubermanlab), Stanford Neurobiologist, sighs act to reset your physiological and emotional state. A few sighs can quickly relax and calm you after a stressful event. 

According to Huberman, “This pattern of breathing occurs spontaneously in sleep when C02 levels get too high but they can be done deliberately any time we want to reduce our levels of anxiety and calm down fast.” 

It is very hard for the brain to control the brain 🧠, which is why tools using the body can help override dysregulation. Breathing is the simplest way to shift our state because the diaphragm is directly connected to the autonomic nervous system.
