Let's face it. This time of year can be stressful. 🎄🕎

Dealing with stress in small doses can be helpful, especially if you are one of those last-minute shoppers. 🏃🏼‍♀️⏳

But when we are faced with ongoing stress without time to rest and recover, we can feel anxious and overwhelmed. 🤯

Many people don't realize that how you breathe influences your stress response and is either helping or hurting you at all times.

The breath is the master controller for easing anxiety and calming the nervous system. We just need to know how to breathe to stop stress in its tracks.

This skill can be taught and practiced giving you more control over your stress levels.

What if you could:
• stop stress in real-time through breathing?
• feel more in control of your mind and mood?
• take 2 healthy breaths instead of 10 inefficient ones?
• be less reactive during stressful times?

Awareness is the first step. So, head to the link in the bio and find out if the way you breathe (mechanics) is stressing you out! 🤯

Breathe easy, and happy holidays!

🤯 Feeling a bit frazzled lately? Try these breathing hacks to stop stress on the spot! 🛑

Here are 5 proven breathing hacks to build awareness, reduce stress and calm the nervous system anytime and anywhere.

#1
👃🏼 Breathe through your nose with your tongue pressed gently at the roof of your mouth and your jaw relaxed. To learn proper tongue placement, say the letter "N." This is where your tongue should rest most of the time.

#2
🫁 Breathe low using the diaphragm-this will increase breathing efficiency and allow the air to enter the lower part of the lungs.
When we breathe deeper into the lungs, the nerve endings at the bottom are stimulated, communicating to the brain that you can relax. This is communicated through the vagus nerve and is the most powerful path to reduce stress in real-time.

#3
🌊 Breathe slowly and rhythmically (8-12 BPM is a good goal). When we breathe slowly and rhythmically (like waves in the ocean), our stress level drops, and we become more relaxed. Alternatively, if our breathing is chaotic and fast, our thoughts will follow, often leading to chronic stress and breathlessness.

#4
🪶 Breathe softly and quietly. Many of us breathe too fast and shallow using our accessory breathing muscles and in/out of our mouth, which tells the brain to be on alert. Stop the cycle by breathing softly and quietly.

#5
🌬️ Lengthen the exhale and pause briefly after each exhale. This slows down the heart and helps the body feel safe and relaxed. When in doubt, exhale out.

I hope this helps! Do you have any hacks of your own?

The holidays can be stressful, even for the little ones in our life.

Slowing down their breathing is a simple way to help kids cope with stress and overwhelm. When we are anxious, our breathing speeds up, which signals the brain to be on alert. We can reverse this "fight or flight" response by breathing low and slow.

The belly breath is a great place to start to help kids feel calm and safe.

While we don't breathe "into the belly," we want to see movement happening low rather than high in the chest and shoulders.

When we breathe diaphragmatically, "belly breathing," we recruit our largest breathing muscle, the diaphragm. This is the most efficient way to breathe and helps to calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety.

How to do it:
1️⃣ Lie comfortably on your back and place your @bebuddy (or stuffed animal) on your belly.

2️⃣ Relax your shoulders, arms, hands, back, legs, and feet. Let's give our buddy a ride up high to the sky!

3️⃣ Begin by exhaling the air out of your lungs.

4️⃣ Now, inhale slowly through your nose, making a big belly.

5️⃣ Exhale and pull your belly in as you watch your buddy fall back toward the ground.

6️⃣ Keep breathing low and slow until you feel your body relax and calmer.

When kids consistently practice breathing low and slow, expanding the belly on the inhale, and narrowing the belly on the exhale, this activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

The outcome of this healthy breathing pattern helps kids:

⭐ calm their minds and bodies
⭐ strengthen the lungs
⭐ increase oxygen to the brain
⭐ reduce heart rate
⭐ relax and restore
⭐ improve focus

Parents and children who experience debilitating anxiety need to learn how to breathe. So I'm here to help.
